چکیده

Morphological abnormalities of left temporal and sphenoid bone were discovered in a 17-year-old boy during a post-traumatic cranial CT scan examination. The patient had not suffered from audiological disorders previously. He did not complain of hearing loss, vertigo or autophony. Further clinical investigations were normal including micro-otoscopy and nasopharyngeal endoscopy. The Valsalva maneuver was correctly performed. Audiometry and tympanometry were without any particularity. These abnormalities consist of a subdivision of the pharyngeal part of the lumen of the Eustachian tube and an abnormal pneumatization of the sphenoid bone. The lower part of the tubal subdivision, proximally slightly larger than normal, opens as usual onto the nasopharynx. The upper part reaches a “mastoid-like” pneumatization of the sphenoid body (Fig. A, B & C: axial, coronal oblique and Minimum Intensity Projection views – arrow and asterisk). The left pterygoid process is also unusually pneumatized and the left temporal bone is more pneumatized than the right. Note that sphenoid sinuses are hypoplastic.

Audible sphenoid-sellar fistula: An unusual complication of transphenoidal surgery.

Eustachian tube problems are relatively common complaints to otolaryngologists' offices. However, clinicians should consider other possibilities when traditional therapies fail to improve symptoms. We present a previously not described case of sphenoid-sellar fistula after transphenoidal surgery causing objective and subjective clicking. Laryngoscope, 126:E314-E316, 2016.

Endoscopic transnasal shim technique for treatment of patulous Eustachian tube.

INTRODUCTION An abnormally patent Eustachian tube, known as a patulous Eustachian tube (pET), can cause disabling autophony as well as annoying transmitted sounds of breathing and swallowing. The elegant work of Poe’s group has shown that the anatomical defect is found in the anterolateral tubal valve of the nasopharyngeal end of the Eustachian tube (ET). To the frustration of both patients and...

Visualization of the eustachian tube lumen with Valsalva computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Assess the feasibility of using the Valsalva maneuver to visualize the cartilaginous eustachian tube lumen with computed tomography (CT) in subjects with no ear disease. STUDY DESIGN Prospective case series study. METHODS Thirty-eight consecutive patients undergoing CT of the sinuses for nose-related complaints with normal radiographic findings consented for a CT of th...

Endoscopic transsphenoidal resection of sellar tumors with conchal sphenoid sinus: A report of two cases

A conchal non-pneumatized sphenoid sinus was previously considered to be a contraindication to the endoscopic transsphenoidal route to the sella due to its small sellar floor and poor anatomical landmarks, such as the optic nerve canal, opticocarotid recess and internal carotid arteries canal. The present study aimed to investigate the methodology and characteristics of the endoscopic transsphe...

PREVALENCE OF TRAUMATIC TYMPANIC MEMBRANE PERFORATION IN PATIENTS WITH A PATULOUS EUSTACHIAN TUBE

Background: With respect to physical relations in force and pressure, we hypothesized that the prevalence of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in patients with a patulous Eustachian tube is greater than normal, because in Eustachian tube patency, the internal air pressure of the middle ear will not increase after compression, subsequent to trauma. Therefore the force upon the tympanic...
